Loyola Marymount University Student Caden Young Named Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar

Loyola Marymount University Student awarded scholarship
    for studying elementary education

Los Angeles, CA  (April 23, 2024) –  Loyola Marymount University student Caden Young has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1500 scholarship in recognition of his inspiring leadership, personal narrative, and academic achievement.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Young is one of nine recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In his personal narrative, Caden explained, “I found my calling to teach during the COVID-19 pandemic. While at home, I tutored my younger brother who struggled with changing to online learning. I really enjoyed it and did some paid tutoring as well. As a person who is on the autism spectrum, which I share openly, I remember the struggles this caused me with socializing and understanding my peers. As I grew up and learned more about the syndrome, I grew a greater understanding of myself and those around me. During my student teaching, I met a 2nd grader who was having a misunderstanding with some other kids. After I stepped in I realized that this child had been in lockdown from Kindergarten until 2nd grade which severely limited his social skills with other kids. He failed to develop social skills properly, causing him to misread cues and situations. This led me to get my education degree. I feel that my experience with autism is an important element that will assist me to promote lifelong learning and the wellness of students, families, and communities. I will support the mental health of all students that struggle and encourage the understanding and acceptance of students with neurodivergent disabilities.”

“Caden’s desire to apply his gifts to help others from a place of understanding will form the foundation of a wonderful career in education,” remarked Nancy Larson. “He has the qualities to be a great teacher, a mentor, and a leader.”

Larson, an author,  former teacher, and curriculum director, has dedicated her life to advancing elementary education.
