Santa Monica College Student Joshua Maldonado Named Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar

Bellflower, CA (Mar 14, 2025) – Santa Monica College student Joshua Maldonado has been named a Nancy Larson Foundation Scholar and awarded a $1500 scholarship in recognition of his inspiring leadership, personal narrative, and academic achievement.

The Nancy Larson Foundation proudly supports students across the country majoring in elementary education by awarding scholarships to deserving students each year. Maldonado is one of eight recipients selected from the many applications received by the Foundation.

In his personal narrative, Joshua explained, “Throughout my high school years, my English teacher Mrs. Gonder was an amazing educator and an even better mentor. Without her, I do not think I would have developed the skills necessary to be a scholar or some of the traits to become a better person. She always encouraged me to explore new ideas and challenge myself in my writing. She planted the seeds that made me want to become a teacher. Through working in several after-school programs with low-socioeconomic children and kids with special needs, my desire to teach was solidified. These experiences showed me the huge need for teachers in special education. It also showed me how much students can benefit from an educator or mentor who truly cares about them. I look forward to becoming a teacher and helping children reach their potential.”

“Joshua really impressed us with his personal narrative about the teacher who inspired him to want to become a better student,” said Nancy Larson. “Through his experiences, Joshua understands what it takes to be a great teacher and an inspiration to children.”
